NARROW ESCAPES...
Our 1939 Opel Super Six (model Kapitän) had some narrow escapes during World War Two. Originally destined for Indonesia (then Dutch East Indies), the car and my family was stuck in the Netherlands because of the war.
The Super Six narrowly survived two bombardments during that conflict.
On May 14, 1940 it survived the 'terror-bombardment' of Rotterdam by the German Luftwaffe, when the parking garage where it was normally parked got a direct hit. Our Super Six was then parked in a street close by. The Opel SuperSix-Kapitän on the photo was not so lucky...
On March 3, 1945 the British Royal Air Force accidentally bombarded a residential neighborhood of The Hague. A couple of of incendiary (fire) bombs landed a street away from where the Super Six was hidden in a warehouse under furniture. Because the wind direction suddenly changed, the fire stopped and the warehouse and our car were saved. :)
